I initially did not set out to paint lone beings but calm, quiet moments. I wanted to use a limited palette to achieve a uniform look into a fantasy world. I find a lot of strength and energy in being alone and wanted to portray a similar regenerative quality to solitude.

I wanted to paint at least one cow painting for this mini exhibition. They are by far my favourite animal and I find that they have an air of quiet confidence and power, which I wanted to depict here.

The concept of this painting was the moment after something momentous has happened. We don't know what happened before but something has led to the laying down of arms and a hope for a better future.

I wanted to portray a look into a safe haven where you are at one with your surroundings. It is not entirely clear whether the watcher is another creature, whether welcome or unwelcome in this space. Still, I wanted to portray a sense of calm and perhaps indifference to onlookers and what is going on outside of this space.

I have a really vivid memory of watching the animated Peter Pan film as a child and being mesmerised by the mermaids, their lair and the overall colouring of the scene and film. This painting also ended up having a feeling of a viewer looking in, which I still did not want to feel like a threat or even a presence in the character's mind.
